SPICE UP YOUR IMMUNITY

As we head into another Autumn/Winter season plagued by pandemic-related uncertainty, it’s more important than ever to protect your health. Adding just a few spices to your cooking routine can make a big impact on how your body feels and performs.

CAYENNE: We are huge fans of spicy peppers in general, but cayenne may be the most accessible of them all. You can add cayenne to any savory dish for a spicy lift, and even traditionally sweet smoothies for a spicy variety. Cayenne works surprising well with dark chocolate (including baked goods and smoothies), and can transform a dish from blah to extraordinary with just a sprinkle. The secret is the capsaicin and other vitamins and minerals. They can fight GI pathogens, and really activate your circulatory system. Increasing that blood flow helps combat illness by transporting immune cells to sites of infection in your body.

GINGER ROOT: Ginger is impressive for its ability to reduce inflammation and fight harmful bacteria and virus. Ginger can also enhance your immune response. Certain chemical compounds in fresh ginger help your body ward off germs. They’re especially good at halting growth of bacteria like E. coli and shigella, and they may also keep viruses like RSV at bay.

CINNAMON: Autumn is the perfect season to boost your cinnamon intake because the smell and tastes are very comforting. Cinnamon helps your body fight infections and repair tissue damage, and is also very good for heart health.

CARDAMOM: This exotic little pod contains manganese, which can help boost your virus-fighting cells. Cardamom is not just for fancy or exotic dishes; one little pot can boost everything from a hot cup of tea, to a healthy baked sweet treat.
